1pm, “Doing the Lab Rat Thing:” The Hidden World of Pharmaceutical Testing on Healthy Volunteers  (Webinar: New York State Office of Cultural Education) Presented by  Jill A. Fisher, PhD, Professor in the Department of Social Medicine and Center for Bioethics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This talk explores the hidden world of pharmaceutical testing on healthy volunteers. Using her book ‘Adverse Events’ as the material for this talk, Professor Fisher will discuss what these clinical trials are and how healthy volunteers’ decisions to participate are often influenced by larger social contexts of economic insecurity and racial discrimination that make clinical trials an attractive financial opportunity. All Day, Virtual Film Screening: Conscience Point View this documentary about the spirited path of one woman determined to make a stand. Shinnecock activist Rebecca “Becky” Hill-Genia who, together with other determined tribal members and allies, wages a relentless, years-long battle to protect the land and her tribe’s cultural heritage from the ravages of development and displacement. 7pm, A Poetry Reading by U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo Offsite, in-Person and Facebook Livestream. United States Poet Laureate Joy Harjo will present a public reading at the Avram Fine Arts Theater at Stony Brook University-Southampton, which sits on traditional Shinnecock lands. This event is part of the National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Long Island project. Tickets are free, but must be reserved in advanced. Register here for the in-person event. 10am, Trout Unlimited Fly-Casting Clinic Caleb Smith State Park Annual Fly-Casting Clinics where participants learn the art of fly casting as well as fly-tying, conservation, and safety techniques. The clinic also offers participants, who must be 16 years and older, tips on equipment and tackle needs. Reservations are required to participate. 1pm, Studebaker: 115 Years of Wagons and Automobiles  Connetquot River State Park Preserve Presenter Bob Muller will discuss their history, including the Studebaker family’s 1736 arrival in colonial America, the sale of their first covered wagon in 1852, wartime military contracts, their many popular and innovative automobiles, the end of their automobile manufacturing in 1966, and the continuing interest in restoring and collecting all things Studebaker.
